East York Meals on Wheels was established by volunteers in 1969. Today, volunteers continue to be the driving force behind all the agency’s activities. Last year, 195 volunteers contributed 7,552 hours of their valuable time. There are many volunteer opportunities at East York Meals on Wheels. Here are some of the jobs that volunteers do:
- Board of Directors
- Committee work
- Administrative and clerical work
- Meals on Wheels drivers
- Meals on Wheels runners
- Meals on Wheels meal packers
- Diners Club reservation clerks
- Diners Club drivers
- Diners Club kitchen staff
- Telephone Reassurance callers
Drivers for Meals on Wheels and Diners Club are reimbursed – at a flat rate – for travel expenses.
Time commitment varies depending on the volunteer opportunity. It can be as little as a couple of hours per month.
Whichever opportunity is right for you, we’ll do our very best to ensure it is rewarding.
The best thing about volunteering with East York Meals on Wheels is the people and the wonderful response I receive from the clients I meet on a regular basis, and knowing that I am making a difference in their lives.
I highly recommend volunteering with East York Meals on Wheels. Even if it is only for a few hours every other week or on a more regular basis, you will very quickly understand that it takes so little effort to make such a big difference in someone else’s life.
The most enjoyable part of volunteering is definitely the experience of being able to help people who need help. I have never had such a rewarding experience in my current or past work or volunteer positions.
